Booty from charity shop

When I went to Hitchin on Friday I went into a charity shop and found some yarn and plastic knitting needles. When I went to pay for them on the counter they had a basket containing little knitted chicks. I picked one up and realised inside the chick was a Cadbury's creme egg, so sweet! I bought one of the chicks. When I got home I made up my own free pattern.

To make a chick you will need...

This is how the chick pattern should look before being sewn up

Knitted mug

After knitting the cupcakes I thought I might make up my own free knitting pattern for a mug. I did toy with the idea of a chintzy teacup and saucer but that was a pattern too far!

My friend says she is sick of seeing the big hat (Knitting Faux pas) post. So lets rectify that. Besides the usual Christmas baking I have been cooking up some cupcakes!

Cut out the pattern from red and white felt.
Attach the red pieces to the white body. At this stage embroider simple facial features. The rosy cheeks are done very lightly with a moistened red coloured pencil (Caren d'Ache type pencil) At this point you can also add decoration, like flower sequins.
Put the two body pieces together and sew around the shape. Leave the base open for stuffing. stuff lightly. Sew the base up. Attach a cord to the top to hang from the tree.

I have designed this Russian doll as a tree decoration. The pattern for the doll is included on the felt bird Christmas decoration pattern doll pattern.pdf . Just click on pdf attachment . I also made some dolls with a patterned cotton fabric and felt. Because I used a patterned material I had to make the face from a circle of flesh coloured felt.

Dove Christmas decoration
The cut out parts of the bird. If you want your bird to have a beak attach the triangle to a corner of the felt square with Copydex. Let it dry. I didn't bother with a beak on the white bird
Fold the square into a triangle and starting from the end with the beak, sew the two edges together. You can hand sew or machine with a small zig zag stitch. When you have about 3cm (1 1/4in) left to stitch, stuff the bird with a small amount of wadding
Roll the two tail pieces together. Push the straight end of the tail piece into the body and stitch in place to secure
Attach the wings. Embellish them with beads and sequins
Fold down the beak end to form head. Sew on two glass beads for eyes at the same time secure the head to the body to keep it in position.
Sew a ribbon to the top of the bird to hang it from. Take a little time to find the point where the bird balances as it won't be the middle, the tail needs counter balancing. Sew a bell to the base

These felt birds are easy to make and only need a minimum amount of sewing. I have made one in white, like a dove. The instructions are for a coloured bird to make the parts easier to identify and assemble. This is a fiesta of a bird! To make the bird you will need

  • felt
  • small amount of wadding
  • two small glass beads for eyes
  • ribbon to hang the bird from
  • beads and bell for embellishment

I have included a free pattern for you to download.

These chickens are very easy to make, the body is based on how to make a juggling bean bag.

From a small amount of felt cut out a beak, wattle and comb put them in place sew up. 2 sides (seam allowance 5mm) Turn chicken inside out, at this point with black embroidery thread make 2 eyes using french knots. Fill the chicken with a small amount of stuffing, split peas for ballast and lavender. Sew up the final side, fold under 5mm seam allowance and top stitch.
