Flog It! in St Albans
A few months ago the BBC filmed Flog It! in St Albans. The programme was broadcast on Friday, I forgot but watched it later on BBC iPlayer. I had to watch because my friend Angie was featured. Angie took an embroidered silk sampler dated 1833, to be appraised. She was asked if she would like it to be auctioned. Angie agreed as it depicted a hunting scene she wasn't keen on. It was sold at the Tring auction house. I thought she came across really well. I have a sampler embroidered by my great great grandma, dated 1880. It isn't the finest example of this kind of work. There are spelling mistakes and some of the words collide with its border. I find that endearing, I can relate to the spelling mistakes! This piece of embroidery connects me with the past not only a social document but a female ancestor used fabric and a needle to create textiles like I do. I could never sell it, it will be passed on to my children. Last night on BBC 2 there was another programme about St Albans, Christina: A Medieval Life (It's on BBC iPlayer). It was presented by Michael Wood and was filmed in and around St Albans. It was refreshing because it was about an ordinary woman's life. Christina was born in 1285 her life traced through official documments of the time, most were for tax purposes!
