Handmade Buttons (Dorset Buttons)

Sometimes it's frustrating when you can't find the right buttons for the garment you have knitted. This is a really easy way to make individual buttons for knitwear. For the buttons I used brass curtain rings, I think you can get plastic ones and these might be more practical when it comes to washing the garment. For the yarn i used wool and embroidery thread. I hope the photograph below showing the process is self-explanatory. First you cover a ring using what I would describe as a blanket stitch. Then create a spoke like framework. Make sure you have an uneven number of spokes, this enables you to then weave your thread in and out of the spokes. The really creative part is choosing the colours that will compliment your garment.

Brilliant idea! I think it might be easier for me to single crochet around the ring rather than doing a blanket stitch but it would end up looking much the same. I hate searching for the 'right' buttons so love the idea of being able to make exactly what I want. Thanks for sharing this one. :)

Hi Angie
This is great, i recently read one of Tracey Chevalliers books (burning bright) and one of the main characters in that makes Dorset Buttons, i've been wondering what they were ever since!
Hope you are well

Hi Claire

Nice to hear from you, although I do check out your blog most days!

Good for you! I taught classes for this technique several years ago, at the Heart of Cross Stitch shows. They were always full. Good job--De

I love this idea!
Sometimes the hardest part of a project is finding the right button.
Thanks for this......suki
