Bib necklaces are really popular at the moment, but can be expensive so why not make your own.
This is my free pattern and tutorial so you can make one for yourself or to give as a present.
You will need:
FELT, for the base. I cut two bibs out from the pattern and machine stitched them together using a zig-zag stitch.
RIBBON, about 1 meter/1yard of ribbon 15 mm (1/2inch)wide, cut in two. Attach the ribbon when stitching the two pieces of the bib together.
'JEWELS', to bejewel the necklace I made Dorset buttons. There is a very nice tutorial for Dorset buttons by Diane Gilleland at Craft Stylish. Instead of the plastic rings, she suggests, I used brass curtain rings. The other technique I used was for Suffolk puffs or yo yos. You can find a tutorial for these at Whipup . I chose shiny luxury fabrics for my Suffolk puffs. I also used a mixture of buttons, sequins, beads and freestyle embroidery to encrust the necklace. My usual mantra is "less is more", but not in this case, MORE is MORE. Overlay and embellish as much as you like to achieve a very individual piece of jewellery
Or you could make a necklace just using buttons, pearly queen style! Make one incorporating brooches or broken pieces of jewellery.
If you make one send me a photo

I was wondering where is the middle store bought necklace from? (the gray flower one with the rhinestone centers)
Hi Jeanne, It's a Vera Wang Rosette Tie Necklace, they were on sale at Bergdorf Goodman a snip at $650 but it looks like they have had a run on them!
love your necklaces! how did you attach the gemstones to the felt base? hand sewn or glued or both? thanks anne
Hi Anne, On my bib necklace I attached every thing by sewing, if sewing is not your thing you could glue things on. Just make sure you get a suitable glue. Use a fabric glue, the kind of glue mentioned on this website http://www.save-on-crafts.com/fabritac.html. It looks fit for the purpose. Hope this was of some help and you give it ago!
Thank you so very much! I just started making these but was concerned about the base. I tried lace and it was too flimsy. Felt or soft wool will work great. And Thanks also for the pattern. This way I cant go wrong!!
I'm so pleased you found it helpful, good luck!
This is fabulous....there are so many possibilities and you have made it look so easy. Thanks!
This is amazing! Thanks for the tutorial. I haven't seen these locally, but I can imagine that with a simple dress or top these could look stunning. Hmmm, I have lots of buttons ....
I bet you would make a fantastic one! It's a good way to play with colour and texture
