Yesterday I bought six 15 cm (6 in) terracotta pots (three for £1 In Wilkinson's at the moment), with the intention of painting them. It was a lovely day to sit in the garden and paint. I decided on a kitsch theme, bright primary colours and polka dots. I used acrylic paints (sample pots of kitchen/bathroom emulsion can be used, they work just as well), applied with a sponge, this gives a more even finish than a paint brush. The polka dots I made using a piece of doweling dipped into white paint then dotted on to the pot at regular intervals. If you want to for added protection, when the pots are completely dry (maybe allow 24 hours to make sure), you could give them a couple of coats of varnish. I am going to put herbs in mine, they will look good on the kitchen windowsill or outdoors. These bright pots would be a good Idea to raise money for a school's Summer Fayre, let the children paint them.
I love these! The red and white one in particular.
might be worth a spray with acrylic varnish to weatherproof a bit? They look great - love the polka dots. Will have to raid Wilkos to see if they have any pots left!
I think it might be a good idea to seal them, can't do any harm. I will mention it in the text, thanks for the suggestion Caroline
Hi Anjie!
I love the colors, dots, and the stripes on our pots!
Now I'm just dying to try and paint some myself.
I hope they look as good as yours do.
Your pots came out very well! They have a lovely 50s feel to them with the polka dots. I have a few pots that I want to mosaic - it is an easy way to decorate a pot - one can use all kinds of broken bits of china and mirror, and it almost always looks good!
I want to mosaic some pots too. I used to teach mosaic and was really inspired when I went to Barcelona and saw Gaudi's Parc Guell, a master piece in broken china!
