The Merchant Tea & Coffee milk rip-off

Laughing cow

Had coffee this morning at the Merchant Tea & Coffee cafe in the Old Town Hall. Very disappointing, not the coffee but the fact they charge extra for milk in the coffee. I ordered two regular Americano coffees with milk on the side, being an adult I like to put my own milk in my coffee. It came to £4.90. I thought that must be a mistake (£2.45 seemed a little steep for a cup of coffee). I was told it was 35p extra for milk! What a rip-off. The jugs were tiny, I sent one back and got a 35p refund and let them know my displeasure! My favourite place for coffee in St albans is Carluccios and they do milk with the Americano at no extra cost, it's a no brainer then.

Shame - I thought the coffee and food there was quite good. And despite being a black coffee man, I've never resented subsidising other people's milk. Carluccios is good but surely the queues mean you have to be quite keen to actually get a cup?

Milk.

This is a total rip-off, you're right. And you've done your part to prevent at least one person from furthering the Merchant cause. Thanks for the warning. I'll get my milk at Waitrose.
